Absolutely. Self-funding your treatment enables you to choose when you are seen, and who you are seen by. King Edward VII’s Hospital consultants are among the finest in the UK, so you can be sure you are choosing one of the best for your knee condition.
The list of available consultants for knee health checks are on this web page.
If you have private medical insurance, you can still choose when you are seen and who you are seen by, from the same list of outstanding specialists.
The booking process is a little different. This ‘package’ price has been created for self-funding patients only and is not applicable to patients with private medical insurance.
However, if you have private medical insurance, the costs of consultations, diagnostics and treatment should be covered. Check with your insurance provider that your condition and chosen consultant’s fees are covered as you may have to pay an excess or shortfall, and obtain pre-authorisation before booking. Your insurance provider will likely require a GP referral too.
If you need any help with the process, our team is always on hand. Please call 020 7467 4344.
You do not need to have a GP referral for a specialist knee health check, although it would be useful to have one.
On average a surgical consultation is between 20-30 minutes, with another 15 minutes for imaging.
The surgeon will take a detailed history about your knee problem, plus any other health conditions, perform a clinical examination, and then – in combination with the X-rays – discuss the likely diagnosis and treatment options.
If your knee problem is likely to be related to a soft tissue problem, such as a ligament injury or meniscal (shock absorber) tear, then an MRI might be required to clarify the diagnosis. This would be charged separately from the health check package.
It would be useful if you could bring copies of any previous imaging (e.g. x-rays, CTs or MRI scans), and any details you have relating to previous treatment(s).
The surgeon will want to examine your knee during the consultation, so it is a good idea to bring a pair of shorts. Alternatively we can provide you with a hospital gown.
This of course depends on the diagnosis, but in general, treatment can be non-operative in the form of pain killers, injections and physiotherapy, or operative in the form of surgery.
Your surgeon will discuss all the treatment options with you before agreeing on a treatment plan.
