Do I need a shoulder assessment?
Shoulder problems can be caused by many different conditions including arthritis, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tears, impingement and tendonitis. More sudden, very bad pain as the result of an injury can also be caused by a broken bone or dislocation.
The most common symptoms that may suggest an assessment is necessary are:
- pain
- stiffness
- swelling
- weakness
- clicking or locking

- Can I choose which consultant I see?

Absolutely. Self-funding your treatment enables you to choose when you are seen, and who you are seen by. King Edward VII’s Hospital consultants are among the finest in the UK, so you can be sure you are choosing one of the best for your shoulder condition.

- Is the price fixed irrespective of how complex my shoulder problem is?

Any shoulder problem would be suitable for this assessment, including problems following previous shoulder replacement.
However, if more complex investigation is required, there might be a supplemental cost.
- Can I use my private health insurance?

If you have private medical insurance, you can still choose when you are seen and who you are seen by, from the same list of outstanding specialists.
The booking process is a little different. This ‘package’ price has been created for self-funding patients only and is not applicable to patients with private medical insurance.
However, if you have private medical insurance, the costs of consultations, diagnostics and treatment should be covered. Check with your insurance provider that your condition and chosen consultant’s fees are covered as you may have to pay an excess or shortfall, and obtain pre-authorisation before booking. Your insurance provider will likely require a GP referral too.

- Do I need a GP referral?

You do not need to have a GP referral for a specialist shoulder health check, although it would be useful to have one.
- How long will the health check take?

On average a surgical consultation is between 20-30 minutes, with another 15 minutes for imaging.
- What happens during a shoulder health check?

Your consultant will take a history: listen carefully to the problem which has brought you to hospital and also enquire about any relevant previous medical issues.
Having established the background, you will then be thoroughly examined to ensure all tests and treatments are focused on your specific circumstances.
- In what instance might I need a MRI scan?

An MRI in the shoulder is used to examine soft tissue problems around the shoulder in detail. An MRI would be useful in diagnosing tendon tears and dislocations.
This would be charged separately from the health check package.
- In what instance might I need an ultrasound guided injection?

Guided steroid injections are used in a number of shoulder conditions, such as impingement and frozen shoulder, to break the cycle of pain – providing not only symptomatic relief but also facilitating rehabilitation.
- Do I need to prepare for a shoulder health check?

No special preparation is needed, but it is helpful to bring a list of medications and allergies with you if applicable.
- What do I wear for a shoulder health check?

The examination includes looking at the collarbone and shoulder blade, so ideally a vest style top. A chaperone is available if you would like one.
- What are the potential treatment options?

The majority of shoulder problems, including injuries, do not require surgery. The goals of treatment are diagnosis, symptom management and rehabilitation to restore function.
Once a diagnosis is confirmed, your consultant will discuss the natural history of your condition, how it is likely to change over time and the treatment options. These include watchful waiting, physiotherapy, ultrasound guided injections and surgery.
- If I need an operation, will it be done by the consultant who sees me?

Yes, absolutely. Self-funding your treatment enables you to be seen by the same specialist from your very first meeting, to your operation, to your follow up consultation. It is still your choice, and there is no obligation to see the same consultant, but you should be aware that if you choose to see another specialist, they will require you to have an initial consultation prior to any surgery.
Please note: If you need urgent surgical intervention, you may be offered the next available appropriate consultant. Don’t worry, you will be given ample time to meet him or her pre-operatively.
