A DEXA scan, also called a bone density scan, is a quick and painless way to check the strength of your bones if you’re worried about osteoporosis or fracture risk.

At King Edward VII’s Hospital, our advanced scanning technology provides accurate results in a calm and supportive setting, giving you clear answers and reassurance about your bone health.

    What is a DEXA scan?

A DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan is a specialist imaging test that measures bone density. It is a reliable way to diagnose osteoporosis and assess your risk of bone fractures.

The scan uses a very low dose of X-ray to create clear images of your bones, usually focusing on the hips, spine and sometimes the wrist, all without any discomfort.

Osteoporosis can affect anyone at any age, but it becomes more common as we get older. It’s more likely after menopause because falling oestrogen levels reduce bone strength, making bones more fragile over time. Men can also be affected, but the condition is more common in women due to these hormonal changes. As bones lose density, the risk of everyday fractures increases.

Because osteoporosis often develops silently without symptoms, many people are unaware they have it until they experience a fracture.
A DEXA bone density scan at King Edward VII’s Hospital supports early diagnosis and timely treatment, helping to protect bone health and lower the risk of fractures.

Why might I need a DEXA scan?

Your consultant may recommend a DEXA scan if you have risk factors for osteoporosis or if you’ve experienced a fracture that could be linked to weaker bones.

You may be advised to have a scan if:

    • You’ve gone through menopause, as lower oestrogen levels can make bones more fragile
    • You’re a man over 50, when bone density naturally decreases with age
    • You have a family history of osteoporosis
    • You’re taking long-term steroid medication
    • You have a low body weight
    • You’ve experienced early menopause or had your ovaries removed

By identifying changes early, a DEXA bone density scan helps you and your doctor take steps to protect your bones and lower the risk of future fractures.

    Preparing for your DEXA scan

There’s very little you need to do before your appointment. You can eat, drink and take your regular medication as usual. To keep things simple, wear comfortable clothes without zips, buckles or buttons, as metal can interfere with the images created by the scan.

Please let us know if you are, or think you might be, pregnant so we can make sure the scan is safe for you.

What happens during my DEXA scan?

Your DEXA scan is quick, simple and painless. The test usually takes around 20 minutes. You’ll be asked to lie on a padded table while the scanner moves slowly over the area being checked.

The scanner is open and quiet, so you won’t feel enclosed or uncomfortable. Throughout the scan, your radiographer will stay with you, explaining each step and making sure you feel at ease.

    After your DEXA scan

You’ll be able to carry on with your day straight after the scan. One of our consultant radiologists will review your results with care, and they are usually ready within 24 hours.

Your consultant will then explain what they mean for your bone health and, if needed, guide you through the best next steps for treatment or lifestyle support.

    DEXA scan FAQs

It’s natural to have questions before booking a bone density scan. Here we answer some of the most common queries about DEXA scans, so you know exactly what to expect and how the test can support your bone health.

    Is a DEXA scan safe?

Yes. A DEXA scan uses a very low dose of X-ray, much lower than a standard chest X-ray. It’s considered a safe test for most people.

    Will the scan hurt?

No. A DEXA scan is completely painless. You simply lie still while the scanner passes over you, and you can speak with the radiographer at any point.

How long does a DEXA scan take?

The scan itself usually takes around 20 minutes. Your whole appointment will normally last less than half an hour.

How often should I have a DEXA scan?

Your consultant will advise how often you should be scanned, depending on your results and risk factors. Some people may only need a one-off scan, while others benefit from regular monitoring.

Can I book a DEXA scan without a referral?

Yes. At King Edward VII’s Hospital, you can self-refer for a private DEXA scan, giving you fast access without delays.
