An ultrasound scan is a safe and reliable way to produce real-time images of organs, blood vessels and soft tissues. At King Edward VII’s Hospital, you can access private ultrasound scans promptly in central London, with clear guidance and expert care throughout your visit.

    What is an ultrasound scan?

An ultrasound scan is a safe, painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of your body. It doesn’t use radiation, which makes it suitable for examining many organs and soft tissues, including blood vessels.

Doctors use ultrasound to check the size, shape and condition of areas such as the abdomen, pelvis, glands, muscles and joints, as well as to assess any suspected lumps. Ultrasound can also guide procedures by providing clear, live images while the radiographer works.
Ultrasound scans may be performed externally, by moving a probe over the skin, or internally, depending on what needs to be examined. The most common internal scan is a transvaginal ultrasound. This involves gently placing a small ultrasound probe into the vagina to assess the womb and ovaries in more detail.

Why might I need an ultrasound scan?

Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound scan to help understand symptoms, monitor an existing condition or guide treatment.

    It’s commonly used to:

    • Assess abdominal symptoms, such as pain or swelling
    • Examine the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas or spleen
    • Evaluate the thyroid or other glands
    • Investigate lumps or soft tissue changes
    • Assess muscles, tendons or joints after injury
    • Review blood flow through blood vessels
    • Examine reproductive organs, such as the uterus, ovaries or testes
    • Guide injections or tissue sample collection (biopsies)

Ultrasound is often the first imaging test used because it provides clear results quickly, does not use radiation, and can be repeated safely when needed.

    Preparing for your ultrasound scan

Your preparation will depend on the area being examined. Our team will explain any specific instructions before your appointment.

For some scans, such as an abdominal ultrasound, you may need to fast. For others, including pelvic scans, we may ask you to drink water beforehand. Many ultrasound scans don’t need any preparation.
If you have any questions before your appointment, please contact us. We’re here to make sure you feel ready and confident before having your scan.

What happens during my ultrasound scan?

When you arrive, a healthcare assistant will welcome you in the waiting area, confirm your details and guide you to the scanning room. You may be asked to change into a gown depending on the type of scan.

Before the scan begins, the clinical team will ask for your verbal consent to proceed. You can ask questions, pause or decide not to proceed at any time. The decision is always yours.

You will lie on a couch next to the ultrasound machine. The radiologist or sonographer will apply a small amount of gel to the area being examined to help the probe make clear contact with your skin. The probe is then moved gently across the area while images are captured in real time.

Ultrasound scans are not painful. You may feel mild pressure as the probe is moved, but the test is comfortable for most people.

    After your ultrasound scan

Once your scan is complete, the gel will be wiped away, and you can return to your normal activities straight away.

Your doctor will usually discuss initial impressions with you before an official report is sent to your referring doctor. Reports are typically completed within 48 hours, so you can move forward quickly with the next steps of your care.

What are the benefits of an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound offers several advantages. It uses sound waves instead of radiation, making it a safe choice if you need repeat scans. It produces real-time images, which means your radiographer can assess movement, blood flow and how the area is functioning as the scan happens.

It’s suitable for many parts of the body and is often used to guide procedures like injections or biopsies with precision. Ultrasound is quick, safe and well established in both diagnosis and follow-up care.

It’s considered very safe for most people, including during pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about ultrasound scans

Here are some common questions patients ask about ultrasound scans, with clear answers to help you feel reassured.

How long will the scan take?

Most ultrasound scans take between 15 minutes and 1.5 hours, depending on the area being examined. Our imaging secretaries will give you a more accurate estimate when you book your appointment.

Will there be anyone with me during the scan?

A radiologist or sonographer will carry out the scan, supported by a healthcare assistant. You can bring a parent, guardian or carer if needed. A chaperone can also be arranged.

    Can I bring my children?

Children are not permitted in the scan room, and we’re unable to offer childcare on site. If children need to accompany you to your appointment, please bring another adult to supervise them. Without a supervising adult, your appointment will need to be rescheduled.

    Is ultrasound safe?

Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation and is considered very safe. If you have any concerns, our team will be happy to discuss them with you.

    Are there alternatives to ultrasound?

Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may recommend other imaging tests such as X-ray, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We’ll always suggest the most appropriate option for your care.
