I’ve been a hip surgeon for over 20 years, and provide a very personal, hands-on service to my patients. I always go the extra mile, and strive to give them the best possible care.
The best part of being a hip surgeon is when patients come back to my clinic saying that their new hip has transformed their lives.
Jeremy Latham is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at King Edward VII's Hospital who specialises in hip surgery, specifically joint replacement, hip resurfacing and revision surgery. {{ label }}
Jeremy trained in Oxford and did basic surgical training there and in Bath. After research fellowships in trauma and spinal surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, he returned to the UK to do orthopaedic training at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. Jeremy worked with the surgeons who developed Birmingham Hip Resurfacing. That was when he decided that he wanted to be a hip surgeon. He finished his training with a fellowship at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.
He has always been fascinated by the way that surgery and technology are so inextricably linked. He uses innovative techniques including the Mako surgical robot and the Optimized Positioning System, both of which help surgeons to improve surgical precision and accuracy.
Jeremy is on the Steering Group of FortisNet at the University of Southampton Institute for Life Sciences. FortisNet is an interdisciplinary hub of expertise in regenerative medicine, orthopaedics, prosthetics, and assistive technologies. He’s travelled the world talking about hips at conferences, and now is the co-founder of a project developing an innovative digital learning platform for doctors. This is very timely, given the shock to the system that COVID has inflicted.
He’s learnt new skills in video production and content creation and has his own YouTube channel which provides information for people with hip problems.
Being involved in the the early days of hip resurfacing has been a particular highlight. I’ve travelled the world talking about it and have met many wonderful surgeons and engineers along the way.
I am on the Steering Group of FortisNet at the University of Southampton Institute for Life Sciences.
FortisNet is an interdisciplinary hub of expertise in regenerative medicine, orthopaedics, prosthetics, and assistive technologies.
I’ve been on the faculty of many courses, teaching consultants and trainees how to do primary and revision hip surgery.
I use cutting-edge technologies such as the Mako surgical robot and the Corin Optimized Positioning System, both of which help to improve surgical precision and accuracy.
I’ve helped to set up a research group looking at how hip replacements fail. We have several peer-reviewed papers from this research.
I have also contributed to a multi-centre international study of hip resurfacing, and am part of a group which is developing a new ceramic hip resurfacing.
