In 2013, Mr Mahi Muqit was appointed a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He specialises in surgery for cataract, retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, vitreous haemorrhage, and diabetic eye disease. He has medical retina expertise in age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, intravitreal eye injections, diabetic macular oedema, and retinal laser.
His PhD research pioneered new pattern scan laser techniques for diabetic eye disease, and he has an international reputation in diabetic retinopathy, co-author of the UK Diabetic Retinopathy Guidelines for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and International Council of Ophthalmology Diabetic Eye Care Guidelines.
At Moorfields Eye Hospital, Mr Muqit currently leads pioneering research trials in the field of artificial retinal prosthesis “bionic eye” for restoration of vision in blinding eye diseases. He is the Chief Investigator for a national NIHR-funded prospective randomized controlled trial exploring a new treatment paradigm for blinding eye infections.
Mr Muqit is an award-winning researcher in global ophthalmology, and works as a voluntary Consultant for Helen Keller International (HKI), and is currently involved with several innovative diabetic retinopathy screening projects based in Southeast Asia.
