Professional Biography

Mr. Antonios Athanasiou is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at King Edward VII’s Hospital and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in Robotic and laparoscopic surgery. He is recognised for his expertise in managing complex General surgery conditions using state-of-the-art surgical techniques.

His clinical practice includes gallbladder surgery for gallstone disease, hernia repairs (inguinal, umbilical, femoral, incisional), anti-reflux procedures for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and hiatus hernia repair. He is highly experienced in keyhole and robotic surgery, which offer patients faster recovery, reduced pain, and minimal scarring.

In 2022, Mr. Athanasiou led the development of the robotic Upper GI surgery service at University Hospitals Sussex, and has since performed over 400 robotic procedures using the Da Vinci Xi system.

He completed advanced training in general and upper GI surgery, including a fellowship in complex Upper GI surgery at St. James’s University Hospital in Leeds. His expertise extends to managing complex hernias, hiatal hernias, reflux disease, and oesophageal motility disorders such as achalasia, using minimally invasive approaches.

Mr. Athanasiou also holds a PhD in liver regeneration following extended hepatectomies. He is active in clinical research, with over 150 peer-reviewed publications focused on minimally invasive techniques, surgical safety, and GI-related metabolic conditions.

In addition to his clinical work, he is deeply involved in medical education. He serves as an educational supervisor for surgical trainees and has been a Senior Lecturer at Brighton & Sussex Medical School since 2020.
