Intensive care is where some patients are constantly monitored and supervised, to help manage the symptoms of diseases and conditions.

Consultants who specialise in intensive care at our Hospital have been through a rigorous selection process and are leaders in their area of special interest. You can expect the highest standards of diagnosis and treatment from any consultant with practising privileges. They will also commonly have working relationships with other consultants within a related specialist area.

Common reasons for intensive care include:

  • serious accidents, such as road crashes or falls
  • serious short-term conditions, such as heart attack or stroke
  • severe infections, such as sepsis or severe pneumonia
  • something that requires major surgery
