Anaesthesia

The medical discipline of Anaesthesia trains Clinicians to be responsible for assessing whether a patient is fit enough to undergo a procedure and select an appropriate anaesthetic. In the course of a surgical procedure, they are responsible for obtaining consent, giving the anaesthetic and organising pain control afterwards. The medical specialty of anaesthesia is practised by Consultants who assist in the preparation of a patient for a surgical procedure and in monitoring and maintaining their condition throughout. An Anaesthetist administers pain control to specific areas of (or all of) the body so that a patient feels nothing during a procedure. This can range from a local anaesthetic where a small part of the body is numbed and the patient remains awake throughout, to a general anaesthetic in which the whole body is placed into a controlled state of unconsciousness.
