He has consistently achieved excellent outcomes in surgery for cancer of the stomach and oesophagus, as reported in the annual National Oesophagogastric Cancer Audit.
He is a leader in the treatment of complications and failures of upper gastrointestinal surgery. This includes recurrent acid reflux and hiatus hernia, complications of weight loss surgery and oesophageal reconstruction for rare and catastrophic conditions such as tracheo-oesophageal fistula. This is a particularly challenging area of practice and he has developed a multidisciplinary approach, resulting in improved outcomes.
Throughout his career, Professor Mughal has been involved in teaching and training and has carried out research on acid reflux and cancer of the stomach and oesophagus. He is currently also the Clinical Lead for the North and Central London Cancer Alliance, leading on early diagnosis and better outcomes of patients with cancer. He has held a number of advisory posts at the national level including bodies such as the Association of Upper GI Surgeons, NICE, NIHR and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
I have led the response of the North Central Cancer Alliance to Covid-19, ensuring that patients with cancer have access to diagnostics and treatments, as well as working on the recovery plan.
Over the last 20 years, I have led on developing specialist oesophagogastric cancer centres in the North West and North Central and East London. I established a service for complex oesophagogastric surgery at UCLH. I have served on committees of national professional organisations including NICE, NIHR and have worked with the Royal College of Surgeons of England as Examiner, Regional Advisor, member of the Specialist Advisory Committee in General Surgery and Council member of the Association of Surgeons of England.
I have received the Living the Values Award (Celebrating Excellence Awards), UCLH.
I am a member of the Invited Review Panel of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Over the last 20 years, I have been involved in training colleagues in complex oesophagogastric surgery.
I have used innovative surgery for trachea-oesophageal fistula and oesophageal reconstruction using the colon.
I have published 83 publications and 4 book chapters, and am the joint Editor of the ‘Handbook of gastric and oesophageal surgery’, commissioned by Oxford University Press, 2014.
