Professor Malcolm Rustin trained in medicine at the Middlesex Hospital including a BSc in Immunology under the direction of Professor Ivan Roitt. He completed an MD thesis entitled “Vascular abnormalities in systemic sclerosis” in the laboratory of Professor Pauline Dowd. {{ label }}
He trained in dermatology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and at the Middlesex and University College Hospitals, London and was appointed Consultant Dermatologist at The Royal Free Hospital in 1989. He has developed a clinical and research interest in cutaneous immunology and has undertaken clinical trials assessing the efficacy of Chinese Herbal Therapy, the immunomodulating drugs tacrolimus ointment, high dose intravenous immunoglobulin and oral pimecrolimus in the treatment of atopic eczema, several biologicals in psoriasis and the use of lasers in the treatment of hirsutism and rosacea.
He is author of over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has supervised 4 MD and 4 PhD theses to completion and is currently supervising 3 further PhDs.
He is a Past Academic Vice-President of the British Association of Dermatologists, Past Chairman of the Dermatology Specialist Advisory Committee of the JRCPTB and Past-President of the Section of Dermatology of the Royal Society of Medicine. He was awarded a Personal Chair in University College London in 2011.
