In 2005, Professor Bainbridge was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital London, and in 2011 was appointed to the Chair of Retinal Studies at UCL. In 2018 he was appointed Surgeon Oculist to Her Majesty’s Household.
Professor Bainbridge specialises in surgery for conditions of the retina including retinal detachment, macular hole and epiretinal membrane. He also manages cataracts, diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration. As a surgeon-scientist his aim is to protect and restore vision by developing effective new treatments for retinal diseases. His programme of translational research extends from the laboratory investigation of mechanisms of retinal disease to clinical trials of new medical and surgical interventions.
He has pioneered gene therapy and stem cell therapy for people affected by blinding diseases of the retina.
I am the only British Ophthalmologist to be awarded the Champalimaud Vision Award, which is the world’s most prestigious prize in vision research.

I am an Educational and Clinical Supervisor at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
I have used state-of-the art techniques for eye surgery, including gene therapy.
