Professional Biography

Ian is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at King Edward VII's Hospital and the Head of Specialty for the department of Trauma and Orthopaedics at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (appointed December 2020). Ian has been working as a Consultant at Imperial since 2014, with a lead role in the Limb Reconstruction unit at the North West London Major Trauma Centre. {{ label }}

Ian studied at the Imperial College School of Medicine and completed his Higher Surgical Training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the North West Thames rotation.

Ian completed Specialist International Fellowships in Hannover, Germany and Perth, Australia.

Ian has a super specialist interest in the management of complex tibial and femoral fractures (open fractures/ mal-united/ non union/ infected fractures) and knee dislocation (pure ligaments and combined fracture and ligament injuries), and receives regional/ national and international referrals.

Ian’s work in limb reconstruction for the last seven years incorporates both circular frames and the Precice nail for treating bone defects/ bone infection/ limb length discrepancy and bone deformity. Ian also performs endoprosthetic joint replacement for complex femur fractures.

Ian performed the first nanoscope assisted circular frame fixation of a complex distal tibial fracture in February 2022 in the United Kingdom and a world first nanoscope assisted rib fracture fixation in February 2021.

Ian uses robotic surgery for all partial and total knee replacements in the NHS and private sector, which he feels contributes to his good recorded Patient Reported Outcome Scores (PROMs).

Ian has an interest in young adult knee osteoarthritis, and performs joint preserving osteotomy (realignment), knee joint distraction, and cartilage regeneration and replacement including microfracture and cartilage transplant (OATs and MACI).

Ian introduced rib fracture surgery to the North West London Major Trauma centre in 2015 and is the clinical lead for the rib fracture pathway and surgical rib fracture fixation. This pathway has successfully reduced mortality in multiple rib fracture and flail chest injured patients.

As a member of the London Limb Reconstruction team at King Edward VII’s Hospital, Ian strives to offer world class multidisciplinary tailored care to the most complex and challenging cases with the objective of restoring each patient’s quality of life and function.
