Hours: Monday – Friday 37.5 hours a week

Shifts: 7.5 hours shift Mon-Fri or x4 longdays

Salary: £36,687.00 per annum

Contract: Permanent

 

Role Summary:

Pre-Operative Assessment Staff Nurse As a Pre-Operative Assessment Staff Nurse at King Edward VII’s Hospital, you will be crucial in preparing patients for their surgical journey. You will conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments, offer patient education, and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients are fully informed and optimally prepared for surgery. This role is critical in identifying risks, supporting patient safety, and enhancing the overall quality of care.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough assessments, including reviewing medical history, performing physical examinations, and arranging diagnostic tests (e.g. blood tests, ECG).
  • Identify potential risks or complications that may impact the surgical procedure, ensuring timely escalation to relevant healthcare professionals.
  • Provide patients and their families with clear, comprehensive information about their surgical procedure, pre-operative preparation (e.g., fasting, medication adjustments), and post-operative care.
  • Address patient concerns and foster a calm, supportive environment to reduce anxiety and ensure informed decision-making.
  • Work closely with the surgical, anaesthetic, and medical teams to ensure seamless patient care from pre-operative assessment to the day of surgery.
  • Participate in care planning meetings to ensure each patient’s needs are addressed holistically, supporting optimal outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed records of all assessments, patient education, and pre-operative preparation.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, including infection control, health and safety, and clinical governance procedures.
  • Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives to contribute to ongoing service excellence and patient safety.
  • Act as an advocate for patients throughout their pre-operative journey, ensuring their rights, preferences, and needs are met with dignity and respect.
  • Liaise between patients and healthcare teams, ensuring clear communication and understanding.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to maintain and enhance clinical competence, keeping up-to-date with best practices in pre-operative care.
  • Participate in training opportunities, clinical supervision, and hospital-wide educational initiatives.

Role Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse with current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK.
  • A minimum of two years of post-registration experience in an acute care setting, preferably in a surgical or perioperative environment.
  • Experience in pre-operative assessment or surgical care, including patient education and preparing patients for procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making abilities, including the ability to conduct comprehensive assessments and identify potential risks.
  • Understanding of clinical governance principles and experience participating in clinical audits and quality improvement activities.
  • Proficiency in using IT systems and electronic patient records for documentation.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will be a compassionate, detail-oriented Registered Nurse who excels in a dynamic, fast-paced surgical or perioperative setting. With a minimum of two years’ experience in acute care, preferably in pre-operative assessments, you will demonstrate a high level of clinical competence and confidence in your ability to carry out comprehensive patient evaluations, identify potential risks, and ensure patients are fully prepared for their surgical procedures.

Your ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams will be essential in delivering holistic, patient-centred care of the highest standard. You will be a strong communicator, able to educate patients and their families with clarity, patience, and empathy, ensuring they feel informed and reassured throughout their care journey.

Technologically adept, you will be proficient in using healthcare IT systems to accurately document patient information and streamline care processes. You will be committed to upholding the highest standards of patient safety and clinical governance, actively participating in quality improvement initiatives and staying up-to-date with best practices in nursing care. A proactive approach to your professional development will ensure that you continuously enhance your skills and contribute to the ongoing success of the Pre-Operative Assessment Team at King Edward VII’s Hospital.
