2007 Independent Healthcare Awards
The Hospital’s exemplary record of cleanliness and use of innovative housekeeping methods have been recognised
The Hospital’s exemplary record of cleanliness and use of innovative housekeeping methods have been recognised in this year’s Independent Healthcare Awards, sponsored by Laing and Buisson.
The awards recognise examples of excellence across the Independent Healthcare sector and are split into 12 entry categories. The judges have this year placed King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes on a shortlist of three in the Hotel Services category for the work carried out by our Hotel Services Department in partnership with our Infection Control Sister.
Whilst many other hospitals have opted for a contracted-out cleaning service, we are proud to have retained an in-house team of 27 Housekeeping staff, all of whom take personal pride in their work throughout the Hospital. The team works closely with our clinical staff to ensure that the highest levels of cleanliness are maintained throughout the Hospital. The continuity provided by such a team, a great number of whom have served the Hospital for many years, has clear benefits for the success of the Department.
Infection Control Sister, Mrs Jennifer Jordan-Moss, Housekeeping Supervisor, Ms Mila Dzamic and Hotel Services Manager, Mr Jeff Hoad have worked together to perform a review of cleaning methods employed throughout the Hospital and have introduced the use of microfibre cleaning at ward level, further enhancing the standards of cleanliness for patients and therefore greatly reducing the risk of infection for patients and staff.

Microfibre cleaning is a revolutionary method of cleaning using lint free cloths, without the need for detergents. Tests carried out to date revealed a considerable reduction in microorganism growth compared with traditional detergent-based methods. The new method is also favourable in terms of cost and environmental impact. Mr Hoad, Mrs Jordan-Moss and Ms Dzamic have worked together to educate and train staff in the new practices. These are now employed on a trial basis when cleaning patient and ancillary rooms on Ward Three, not only bringing benefits to patients and staff by ensuring a cleaner environment, but also leading to an increased level of health and safety for our Housekeeping staff. It is intended that microfibre cleaning will be introduced throughout the Hospital in due course.
We are delighted that the hard work of Mrs Jordan-Moss, Mr Hoad and his team has been recognised and will be keeping our fingers crossed for first prize when the winners are announced at the official awards ceremony, which is to be held at The Hilton, Park Lane on the 12th September 2007.
