Newly Appointed Minister to Continue Work as Sister Agnes Consultant

Following his appointment as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department of Health in the new Government Cabinet, King Edward VII's Hospital Sister Agnes is delighted to confirm that Professor Lord Darzi will continue his work as a Consultant Surgeon at the Hospital.

Lord Darzi, who specialises in minimally invasive surgery, will carry out ministerial duties in his new political role whilst continuing to work one day a week for the NHS. Promoted from his position as National Advisor on Surgery, his first task in his junior ministerial position will be to carry out a review of NHS services, to be published in July 2008. Lord Darzi will be working with the Health Secretary Alan Johnson to investigate how the NHS can provide an improved quality of care for its patients.

Acclaimed for research undertaken in his field, Lord Darzi gained the Hamden Award for Medical Research Excellence in 2004. His expertise was particularly beneficial during the Hospital’s recent installation of the Storz OR-1 digital system for laparascopic surgery.

King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes

King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes was established in 1899 by two sisters, Agnes and Fanny Keyser, who turned their home at 17 Grosvenor Crescent into a hospital for sick and wounded Officers returning from the Boer War. King Edward VII became the Hospital’s first patron.

The Hospital moved to its present site in Beaumont Street in 1948 when it was officially opened by HRH Queen Mary.

Today, King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes is a private independent, acute Hospital, registered with the Healthcare Commission and recognised by Investors in People, offers the highest standards of medical excellence, the most modern equipment and facilities combined with impeccable standards of care from which so many patients and their families have benefited over the years.
