After medical school at Oxford University and St Thomas’ Hospital, David Melville trained at hospitals in Portsmouth and London. He spent over 3 years at St Marks Hospital training in colorectal surgery and colonoscopy as well as undertaking research into colitis on which he published his DM thesis. He was then appointed a consultant surgeon to the North Middlesex Hospital where he worked for 9 years operating on upper and lower gastrointestinal conditions as well as general and paediatric conditions. He then moved to St George’s Hospital in 2000 where he has since worked. At St George’s Hospital he was responsible for introducing laparoscopic (Keyhole surgery) for the treatment of bowel cancers.
