Anton Emmanuel obtained his medical degree from London University. He is a Senior Lecturer in Neuro-Gastroenterology at University College London and Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College Hospital, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen Square) and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore). Prior to this he was Senior Lecturer at Imperial College and St Mark's Hospital.

His current clinical work is congruent with his academic work on gut neurophysiology and functional gastrointestinal disorders of the upper and lower gut. He currently supervises 5 post-graduate research fellows undertaking higher degrees. As well as undertaking endoscopy his speciality practice includes patients with functional upper and lower GI disorders, gut complications of neurological disease, pelvic floor dysfunction and inflammatory bowel disease.

He is ex-Chairman of the NeuroGastroenterology (NGM) section of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and is the Medical Director of Core, the largest UK gastrointestinal charity. He is editor in chief of Frontline Gastroenterology, a specialist clinical journal. He has published over 100 papers, written over 20 book chapters and 3 GI textbooks.
